Netherlands gives ECOWAS 500,000 euros for peace promotion in West Africa

Aug 6 (AFP) - The Netherlands on Wednesday gave 500,000 euros (570,000
dollars) to the west African regional grouping ECOWAS to assist in
promotion of peace and security in the region, an official of the
organisation said. A cheque for the amount was presented to ECOWAS
Executive Secretary Mohammed Ibn Chambas, the official said.

The Netherlands had earlier contributed one million euros to the
Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for the same
purpose, he added. No further details were provided. In its latest
peacekeeping mission Nigerian troops that are the vanguard of an ECOWAS
force that is eventually expected to number between 3,000 and 5,000
soldiers began arriving in war-torn Liberia on Monday.
