The northern regional minister, Gilbert Seidu Idi, has stated that the
recent cache of arms found in some palaces in the area does not signal
preparations for another armed conflict by the ethnic groups. Rather,
the security agencies believe the arms found at the palaces at Dolung
and Kobun last Friday (21 January) were part of the arms used in the
last northern conflict.

Mr. Idi was speaking in an interview with Radio GAR (Greater Accra
Region) this morning. The regional minister emphasized that there is
total peace in the north and there is no sign that the region will
witness another ethnic turmoil.

Asked whether the chiefs in whose palaces the arms were found would be
prosecuted, Mr. Idi said the issue demands a lot of diplomacy and tact
in its handling to ensure that things do not get out of hand.
