Ghana: Response To Govt Moratorium on Unlicensed Arms Said Discouraging

GHANA BROADCASTING CORPORATION RADIO 1

Saturday, February 10, 2001

Reports say response has not been encouraging to the government's
two-week moratorium for all unlicensed weapons to be handed over to the
police. Sources close to the police said nine days since the order, few
stations in Accra have either one or two weapons handed over while
others had nothing. Our Ashanti Region correspondent said nobody has
complied with the directive. He said the police have appealed to all
concerned to take advantage of the moratorium without any fear of
intimidation.

He, however, warned that they would clamp down on all those with
unlicensed weapons after the deadline, adding that they have
information on such persons. All those who additional information are
urged to disclosed it to the police as their identity will be kept
secret.
