Reports from Togo indicate that on the eve of the presidential
election, a number of political activists, mainly from opposition
strongholds, were arrested on the orders of the Togolese authorities.

Those arrested are alleged to have smuggled weapons across the Togo
border from Ghana, with a view to fomenting violence in Togo during and
after the election. Sources say Togolese political experts have
expressed utter surprise and disappointment at this latest action of
the authorities.

Meanwhile, there are indications that the Aflao border, which was close
unilaterally last Friday (19 June) by the Togolese Government, is
likely to be opened to travelers tomorrow.
