Cotonou, Benin (PANA) - Beninese journalists interested in promoting peace
and security have set up a network to combat the proliferation of small arms
and light weapons in the country.

Fernando Hessou, editorial director of the daily Le Point, and Information
Secretary of the network, told PANA Saturday it would seek to "better inform
the people about the consequences of the proliferation and circulation of
light weapons."

The network also aims at ensuring the national media become fully engaged in
the fight against the illegal trade and use of small arms and light weapons,
the prevention and management of conflicts and the promotion of tolerance
and a culture of peace.

Hessou said the network plans to train journalists in the organisation of
press campaigns to sensitise the people on issues of security and peace.

The publication of periodic reports, creation in public and private organs
of peace promotion outfits, setting-up of a data bank on the proliferation
of light weapons and actions carried out to combat the phenomenon, were
among activities planned by the network, Hessou said.
