Customs Data

There are many ways of gathering data on Small Arms Transfers. Customs Data often proves informative because it is released by many states that do not issue annual reports; often is more  detailed than many national annual reports; and standardized categories mean that it is easy to compare states' exports with each other.

However, customs data can exclude some transfers, particularly military aid which may not pass through customs. Furthermore, some countries censor their data. Customs Data should therefore be used to discern a minimum value of a state's arms exports.

In combination with other data sources, Customs Data, to a great extent, can provide the basis of an analysis of the arms exports of an individual country. The data is based on the export/import reports submitted by the exporter/importer.

More information, including links to national statistical offices, can be found via the World Customs Organisation.
